Well…it happened…

Thirty-two men’s curling teams assembled at the Oakville Curling Club January 27-29 for the 57th Annual Sportsmen’s Bonspiel. There were a lot of laughs, maybe a few drinks consumed, and along the way the most generous group of curlers you will ever find, raised over $22,000 for our partner charity - Sleeping Children Around the World.

We’d like to congratulate Team Willsey (John Willsey, Brad Lumley, Matthew Garner, Spencer Dunlop) who participated in the Ontario Men's Tankard in Port Elgin, Jan 23-29, 2023. Although a repeat of their St. Thomas Classic win wasn’t in the cards, we would like to thank Team Willsey for proudly representing the Oakville Curling Club at the event.

On January 19, 2023, the Oakville Curling Club hosted 4 games as part of the 2023 Strathcona Cup Tour. We were visited by 20 Scottish curlers who belonged to the Central Tour group. Similar Tour Groups were touring the Maritimes and Western Canada at the same time.

The Strathcona Cup has a history of 120 years and occurs only every 10 years. Five years from now, in 2028, a contingent of 40 Canadian curlers will travel to Scotland for a rematch.

Oakville teams were skipped by Ian Tetley, Jim Wilson, Matt Lawton and Bruce Webster. Games were played in mid-afternoon beside 4 regular season games in the Senior Men’s League.

All four Strathcona Cup games were punctuated by a 4th End Break in which brooms were “stacked” in the rings as players went off for a wee dram.

Trillium 1On January 19th, 2023, Ontario Trillium Fund (OTF) representative Dianne Lawson was on hand to celebrate the $419,400 Community Building Fund Capital grant awarded to the Oakville Curling Club to finance the arena floor replacement. Completed in October 2022, this project provides decades of continued life to the Club’s legacy.

Also on hand to celebrate the event, and enjoy the Strathcona Cup games, were Mayor Rob Burton, Ward Councillors Janet Haslett-Theall & David Gittings, Rebecca Edgar (Visit Oakville), representatives from Federal Minister Anita Anand’s office and other local community organizations & partners involved in the project.

The Oakville Gathering will host 32 teams over a 3-day weekend in late September 2023, a little less than a year from now. Four of the 32 teams have been set aside for Oakville CC Curlers to participate in and have the opportunity to play against teams from Scotland, Sweden, Norway, Czech Republic, USA and other parts of Canada. The Gathering is capped with a party / banquet called a Kitchen Ceilidh (pronounced Kay-lee) on Saturday night to be held at the Holiday Inn. The popular local group called Fiddlestix will provide live music for the occasion.

To participate in the Gathering, Oakville Curlers can sign up on-line on the Individual Sign-up Page on the Club’s Website. The cost per Oakville Curler will be $100 and will include a minimum of 2 games and admission to the Kitchen Ceilidh. Individual Registration is limited to 48 Oakville Curlers.

If you have any questions about the Gathering, contact Rick Brady or Dave Haigh.

From all the ice staff, we hope you are enjoying the new floor/ice this season. As a general practice, routinely changing your gripper and broom pad once or twice a season is not only good for your game, but also helps maintain the quality of the ice. As such, OCC will be offering a 10% discount on grippers and pads when purchased through the Club Office between January 9th – 20th, 2023. Boxes are located outside of the office where your old equipment can be placed for recycle/donations.

We’d like to congratulate Team Wilson (Jim Wilson, Wayne Martin, Ross Scarrow and Dan Leier) who participated in the Masters Provincial Championship in Simcoe, Dec 14-18, 2022. Although the banner may have eluded the team, Team Wilson proudly represented the Oakville Curling Club at the event.

The Human Resources committee would like to welcome, and thank, Shari Angle to the committee; her HR experience & guidance has been invaluable as the search for a new General Manager proceeds.

Applications for the General Manager position were closed late November at which time, the Club had received over 50 applicants. A review was completed earlier this month which resulted in a very promising field of applicants.

The committee has begun its interview process with recommendations to the Board anticipated in the new year. More information will be communicated as it becomes available.
