Evening Men

The men's league concluded with a very successful men's closing night with over 160 people in attendance. Congratulations to all of the winners pictured below, with a special shout out to Team Scott Foster who won his very first club championship.

The Bob Kelly Man of the Year award was also announced at the closing night. The award was given to James Francolini for all his work to promote the club as President over the past few years, as well as stepping up as interim GM.

Have a great summer and see you all on the ice in the fall.

Senators

The Senators league boasted 31 new or returning-from-at-least-a-year's-absence "retired gentlemen" to its roster for the 2023-2024 season.  The volunteer crew, as always, went above and beyond in managing the league's operations.  There were more players, more teams, more games, more prizes, and the practice of telling bad jokes after each draw remained at its long-time standard.  Highlights of the Senators season included:
  • a return to the use of the mostly vacant ice time on Friday mornings - a win-win for both the Oakville Curling Club and the Senators league
  • two well-attended and much enjoyed luncheons, one at Christmas, and the end of season Closing Lunch.  The Christmas lunch also included several retired-from-curling Senators, who we are always pleased to see, and are welcome to attend and socialize anytime Senators curling is happening.
  • to add variety to the games, and responding to the previous year's Senators' survey, skins games were brought back on a monthly basis, and position rotations were introduced on an occasional basis.  Another important format change was making all games 7 ends, to ensure that all teams would have an equal number of ends played, and keep everyone's chances of earning prizes fair.
  • games at other clubs (Dixie, Mississaugua, and Burlington Golf) were a regular part of the Senators schedule.  Teams from Dixie and Mississaugua came to play at Oakville, as well.  Senators players, both from Oakville and from other curling clubs, look forward to maintaining these enjoyable inter-club relationships.
The Senators league looks forward to welcoming more new (and returning?) players to its numbers in the coming years.  We have a spot for you.

Monday Night Open Fun League

Another fun year for Monday Night Curlers with;

  • Five Rounds of play with each curler playing on five different teams
  • Tailgate Parties with Pizza, Wings and other health food
  • Some really tough Hot Shots made for prizes

The Monday Night Open League was the first evening league to reach full capacity following COVID thanks in large part to L2C Grads coming from the Learn-to-Curl program. The league is evenly split between experienced curlers and beginner curlers who are quickly becoming experienced curlers through Monday Night Curling.

MNO also now has two wheelchair curlers who have blended in nicely with Monday Night Curlers. On the final Monday Night, Billy Bridges, one of our wheelchair curlers, brought in his numerous Olympic Medals won in Sledge Hockey to show to everyone.

From numerous comments received, it appears that Monday Night Curling will fill up again quickly when registration for the 2024-25 Season begins.

As the season winds up and you begin to think about cleaning out your lockers, on behalf of the many wonderful staff members, volunteers, and Board, we hope you had an enjoyable season and look forward to seeing you again next season. And please take the opportunity to thank the staff and volunteers before you head off to the links for their tremendous work,

A few housekeeping matters before you head off. In this edition of the newsletter, you will see articles asking for your support and volunteers - in particular:

  • Board positions for next season are still open. We encourage any members interested in helping to shape the Clubs future direction to please consider joining.
  • The OCC Mural Design Challenge finalists have been selected and the Club needs your input to decide which design will help liven up the arena; the article in this bulletin has further details
  • In the coming days, you will receive details about an OCC Member Survey. Your feedback is important so, please, take the time to complete the survey to help the many volunteers and Board as the Club moves forward.

Regards,
James Francolini

The Gathering II

The Gathering 2 640 16x9

We had so much fun last September with The Gathering I that we are going to do it again this coming September. Bonspiel dates are Friday, September 27th to Sunday, September 29th.

There are already 32 teams signed up and we are expecting the Bonspiel to fill in the next month. We are limiting local (Golden Horseshoe) teams to 4, and we are limiting Oakville Curling Club to 4 teams. Oakville Curlers can participate by signing individually for the event. Cost per person is $112.50 which includes 3 games and a Friday night banquet called a Kitchen Ceilidh. For those curlers who weren’t early enough to secure a spot on one of the house teams, we are running a Spares List, and using Spares to supplement visiting teams which may need an extra player or two.

We are currently looking for a few more teams particularly from Europe and Quebec. If you know curlers from any of these areas, please send them a note to tell them about our Gathering .

We are also looking for event Sponsors who would like to promote their International Trade Name or Trademark to a group of about 200 international curlers. Please contact Rick Brady at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if interested.

OCC Bylaw Special General Meeting

On Monday March 12th, 2024, a Special General Meeting (SGM) of the Members was held virtually to review and ratify proposed changes required for the Club’s Bylaws. The proposed changes were made to ensure the Club’s bylaws remain compliant with changes to the Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, 2010 (Ontario) proclaimed on October 19, 2021. In the meeting, the Governance Committee walked members in attendance through the shared material and answered all questions raised. A motion to approve the changes was then put forward which passed unanimously.

The approved Bylaws will be registered with the applicable Province bodies to show compliance. Once registered, they will be posted to the Club’s website (see the Resources > Policies & Waivers menu option) . For those wishing to review the presentation material, the Special General Meeting Materials webpage (see the Resources > SGM Material menu option) will continue to be available until the start of the next season; this includes updates to the Q&A documentation to reflect any additional questions asked during and post special general meeting.

We’d like to thank the Governance Committee members for their tremendous efforts to review and prepare the Bylaw changes required to remain compliant and for their participation throughout the SGM process. Without their dedication, this would not have been the success it has been. I encourage you to visit the Committee’s webpage to see the Committee members so you can personally extend your thanks for their efforts the next time you see any of them.

You may have noticed artwork hanging on the Club Champions wall in the lounge – if you haven’t, we encourage you to view it the next time you are in the Club. For those not aware, the Oakville Curling Club partnered with Sheridan College's Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design (FAAD) to establish the Mural Design Challenge. The Challenge was open to all FAAD students with the purpose of (1) creating a visually engaging design that reflected the spirit, heritage and inclusion of curling and the Oakville Curling Club and (2) in furtherance of the Club’s mission to support local community student development by providing Sheridan FAAD students a real-world venue & opportunity to showcase their talents.

On Friday March 8th, 2024, the deadline for submissions closed and the finalists’ designs selected. Those design series are available to view on the Club Champions wall, on the Club’s Mural Design Challenge webpage and below. In April, members will receive instructions and asked to vote for two things: (1) the design series they would like to see in the arena and (2) where in the arena the murals will be hung. Note, members will have the option when voting to indicate they’d rather not have any design hung in the arena.

If so inclined, members can make a tax-deductible donation (for amounts over $10) towards the Mural Design Challenge through the National Sports Trust Fund (NSTF). The proceeds will be used towards the OCC Mural Design Challenge (prize award, mural creation & installation) and other initiatives for the arena’s general appearance. Donors who contribute at the certain levels may also choose to have their names appear alongside the murals in recognition of their generosity. For more information on how to donate, please review the National Sports Trust Fund Donations (NSTF)  section of the Mural Design Challenge webpage.

President, Oakville Curling Club

Ian TetleyI hope this letter finds all of you doing well and enjoying the awesome winter curling season! The club is on pace for a banner season with a house full of accomplishments.

Firstly, we recently got some amazing airtime during the Curling Day in Canada TV special aired on TSN during the Scotties.  How cool is that? It's fantastic to see our club and members Scott Cooke and Erin Flowers getting recognized on a national level for their hard work during the United We Curl event held here back in September. Kudos to each of you for your dedication and promotion of our club and the exceptional event!

Speaking of which, I want to express my admiration for everyone's contributions, as our club slides its way to full capacity. This is in large part due to our instructors' group, who have made themselves available, to lead our Try Curling day and our Learn to Curl programs. These programs have lifted our membership numbers from 600 in 2022 to 960 this season.  With a wide range of leagues for all levels, we are truly one of the best clubs around. It is such a pleasure to be a part of this community of passionate and committed curlers.

Our board, our president, and our committees have been hard at work bringing our club into compliance with respect to new ONCA legislation (updated bylaws and policies), AODA compliance (which will remove the barriers for people with disabilities to access our club) and working with the city on drainage issues and the future paving of our west parking lot. This is a big focus for our board as we navigate the waters of Ontario Trillium Fund grants and contractors. It is truly a wonderful sight to see our board volunteers selflessly working as a cohesive team to build a better and more successful club.

So, here's to many more years of success, camaraderie, and outstanding curling performances! Thank you all for being a part of our amazing club.

Ian Tetley
