We are excited to welcome both returning and new curlers to the Oakville Curling Club Summer League. Whether you are coming back for another great season, joining us for the first time, or signing up for one of our Learn to Curl programs, we look forward to another fun, competitive, and chill-out summer on the ice.

Registration for all leagues, returning members, new members, and Learn to Curl programs will open at 12:00 noon on April 1 and remain open until midnight on April 15. Registration will then close temporarily and reopen on May 1.

To help ensure a fair and organized registration process, please review the following guidelines:

Registration Guidelines

Returning Members

Returning members will have the right of first refusal to retain their place in the same league they played in the previous year. The period from April 1 to April 15 is the window for returning members to secure their position.

New Members

New members registration will open on April 1^st as well, but we cannot confirm their selected league until April 17^th. If a new member is not confirmed in their chosen league, they will be offered either:

• a full refund, or
• the opportunity to consider openings in other leagues

Team Preference Order

Teams will be prioritized using the following order:

1. Four returning members
2. Four returning members from one league moving together to another league
3. Three returning members and one new member
4. Two returning members and two new members
5. One returning member and three new members

For all registrations, the time of registration will be used as the benchmark to determine priority.

Team Registration

A returning member or new member may register a team to have it placed on the league list. Once the team is confirmed in the league, all remaining team members must be registered by May 15th in order to secure the team’s place.

Oakville Curling Club Announces the Hugh Murphy Scholarship to Support Junior Curlers Pursuing Post-Secondary Education

The Oakville Curling Club is proud to announce the creation of the Hugh Murphy Scholarship, a new award established to support young athletes from our club as they pursue post-secondary education.

Hugh Murphy was a long-time member of the Oakville Curling Club and a friend to many. He is fondly remembered for his warm, genuine personality and his great big smile. His record as a Mixed Curling Club Champion is unmatched and he is dearly missed by all who knew him. As impressive as Hugh’s accomplishments were as a curler, his true legacy was not measured in banners—it was measured in people.

Hugh’s real passion was junior curling. He believed deeply in helping young curlers grow in skill, confidence, and love for the game. He gave his time generously offering on-ice instruction, making introductions and opening doors for young athletes, and creating opportunities for kids to build friendships and community. Many will remember Hugh for the joy and connection he brought to youth curling through events like his Orphans Bonspiel, and for the many fun, welcoming junior experiences where kids could laugh, play, and enjoy the great game of curling.

The Hugh Murphy Scholarship will be awarded to Oakville Curling Club youth curlers who are seeking financial support to assist with post-secondary education. Youth curler is defined as any curler who spent a portion of their youth career in a program at the Oakville Curling Club. The scholarship reflects the values Hugh lived every day: kindness, encouragement, and a belief that character matters as much as competition.

• Good sportsmanship
• Propensity for leadership
• A great team player
• Active involvement as a curler at the Oakville Curling Club
• Plans to attend post-secondary education

About the Scholarship

The Hugh Murphy Scholarship was established by the Oakville Curling Club to support youth curlers of the Oakville Curling Club who are pursuing post-secondary education. This scholarship honours Hugh’s long-standing dedication to junior curling and his commitment to helping young athletes grow—on the ice and beyond it.

Purpose

The scholarship provides financial assistance (up to $2000) to help reduce the cost of post-secondary education (for example: tuition, books, and required academic supplies). The award is intended to recognize applicants who reflect the values Hugh embodied: character, sportsmanship, leadership, and teamwork.

Eligibility

• Current or former youth curler at the Oakville Curling Club
• Be pursuing post-secondary education (college, university, apprenticeship, or another recognized post-secondary program)
• Demonstrate strong character, sportsmanship, leadership potential, and a team-first mindset

Selection Criteria

1. Character: Demonstrates integrity, respect for others, and a positive presence within the club and community.
2. Sportsmanship: Competes with fairness and respect, supports teammates and opponents, and represents the club well.
3. Leadership Potential: Shows initiative, responsibility, and the ability to positively influence others on and off the ice.
4. Team Player: Contributes to team culture, encourages others, and demonstrates commitment and reliability.
5. Commitment to Curling and the Oakville Curling Club: Participation in club programming, junior events, volunteering, mentorship, or other forms of involvement.
6. Educational Goals: Clear plans for post-secondary education and thoughtful reflection on how the scholarship will help.

Application Requirements

• Applicant Information — Name, contact information, and OCC involvement (years at club, teams/programs participated in).
• Education Plans — Name of institution/program (if known), intended area of study/training, and anticipated start date.
• Personal Statement (300-600 words recommended) — Your curling journey; how you demonstrate character, sportsmanship, leadership, and teamwork; your educational goals; and how the scholarship would support your next steps.
• Reference / Letter of Support (1 required) — From a coach, teacher, club volunteer, employer, or community leader. Should speak to character, sportsmanship, leadership, and teamwork.
• Optional Additions — Volunteer involvement, awards, community participation, curling highlights, and/or context regarding financial need (optional).

Submission Process

• Applications must be submitted by April 19th, 2026, at 12 noon.
• Submissions will be reviewed by a scholarship selection committee appointed by the Club.
• Recipients will be notified by April 30^th, 2026, directly and may be recognized by the Club during an OCC event or announcement.

The 2026 Ontario Senior Curling Championships at the Oakville Curling Club will be remembered as an extraordinary event, and that is entirely because of the remarkable people who made it happen.

To the members of the Oakville Curling Club, thank you for the outstanding job you did in hosting this championship. From the many volunteers who generously gave their time to help with game timing, to those who donated the use of their lockers, to everyone who put up signs and made all players and guests feel so welcome — thank you. For me personally, and on behalf of our team, it was an absolute thrill to play here at home with so much support surrounding us. I was proud of our performance. While we were disappointed to lose in a tiebreaker, we were not discouraged — we left it all on the ice and were beaten by strong teams.

Congratulations to Team Cochrane and Team Middaugh on winning the Ontario Provincial Championships. And a very special congratulations to Melissa Foster as a member of the championship-winning Team Middaugh. Back-to-back championships is an outstanding accomplishment, and we wish them every success as they head to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, December 6–13, to compete at the Nutana Curling Club.

Over this past weekend a number of teams from across the province were taking part in qualifying events, all vying for a spot in the upcoming 2026 Ontario Seniors Curling Championship to be hosted by The Oakville Curling Club March 11th - 15th. 

I'd like to congratulate our following members...

• Janet Murphy who plays vice for team Rizzo from the Mississauga Golf & Country Club.
• Melissa Foster who plays second for the defending National Champions, team Sherry Middaugh from the Barrie Curling Club. 
• Kirsten Wall who plays vice for team Froud from the Alliston Curling Club.

What an incredible accomplishment and something we should all be incredibly proud of. A total of 64 players will be entered for the championship and 7 are members of the OCC. Keep in mind there are well over 200 curling clubs in Ontario for perspective.

Our first Euchre event in 2026 was held on Sunday, January 18th.  We had 44 registered players …  and 13 of them attended for the first time! 

We’re grateful to everyone who spread the word about this fun and friendly event. And a big Oakville Curling Club welcome to our 13 new participants.

Greeting to all OCC members,

I hope you are enjoying the 2025/26 season to date. Our league Directors and Convenors have been working diligently to ensure that all the leagues are well planned out and run without a hitch. To all of our Directors and Convenors…Thank you!

I would also like to send a special thank you to all of our staff. Ian, Casey, Scott and his team, and of course our wonderful bar staff who all work hard to ensure that every time we step into the club and onto the ice we enjoy a ‘best in class’ experience.

It has been and will continue to be an extremely busy year at the OCC. We have seen another successful Gathering Bonspiel run by Rick Brady and his volunteer group and Scott Cooke and Andrew Skelton once again took the reigns on a fun filled United We Curl Bonspiel. It looks like all of our upcoming club bonspiels will once again be sell outs and I congratulate all of the organizing committees on their efforts!

Scott and Melissa Foster are off to Ottawa for the Senior National Championships November 29^th – December 6^th. Scott will be playing 3^rd for the Mike Harris Team and Melissa will be playing 2^nd on Team Sherry Middaugh. I know I speak on behalf of everyone at the OCC when I say how incredibly proud we are of them and wish them the very best in their pursuit of a National Championship. I think we can find the room in the lounge for a new banner or two!! Have a great time Melissa and Scott!

The OCC will also be hosting the 2026 Ontario Seniors Championships March 11- 15 showcasing the provinces top ‘veteran’ curling talents. I’m hoping the club will be well represented! Our organizing committee is working behind the scenes to ensure it is a great success. I encourage all of our members to try and make it to the club and take in this wonderful event.

As part of the on-going upgrading of our facilities. On December 22nd and 23rd we will be converting our archaic analog camera system to a fully digital system. With this system will come enhanced graphics and imagery but also the capability to live stream games on sheets 3 and 6. Initially, these two sheets will be our TV sheets. They will be equipped with 4K PTZ (Point Tilt Zoom) cameras so that we can continually show games on those sheets via YouTube but we will also have the ability to produce the games. This system is long overdue and we look forward to maintaining this club as best in class.

Hard to believe but Christmas is just around the corner and in the spirit of giving, the Oakville Curling Club has donated surplus funds from our OLG Bingo Fund to 2 very worthy local charities. Our past president, James Francolini, who volunteers for the Fare Share Food Bank, presented a cheque in the amount of $2,500 to that organization last week and Ian and I had the pleasure of presenting a cheque to Gary O’Neill, Executive Director of the Kerr Street Mission in the amount of $5,500. Both of these organizations do tremendous work and rely on donations to assist people that need the support of their community. I have included a link below to both of these charities and would encourage members to have a look at the work they do and support them in anyway you can, especially at this time of year.

Recently, OCC’s Day Women and The Senators brought their leagues together for the 2nd Guys & Gals Bonspiel. This fun and friendly mixed team bonspiel consisted of 7 ends and a roll off, followed by lunch and some great prizes! With 56 curlers making up 14 mixed teams, competition was stiff!
