Dust off those brooms—Oakville Curling Club Summer League starts next week!

Dear Curlers,

Welcome to another exciting season of the Oakville Curling Club Summer League! All play kicks off next Monday, which means it’s officially time to start limbering up those muscles—and yes, that means doing a stretch without a 12 oz drink in your hand!

It’s time to dig into the closet, find that curling broom that’s been collecting dust all summer, and track down your shoes, slacks, warm jacket, and gloves. Don't forget to check the bottom of your curling bag for your stopwatch; make sure it still works or grab a fresh battery before heading over.

To help keep our season running smoothly, here is everything you need to know before stepping onto the ice:

Game Times & Bell Rule

Games begin precisely at 6:30 PM and 8:45 PM. We will be using the bell rule to keep games on track. There will be one bell per game. When you hear it, finish the end you are currently playing, plus one more.

  • Early Draw (6:30 PM): Bell rings 1 hour and 40 minutes into the game at 8:10 PM.
  • Late Draw (8:45 PM): The bell will sound 1 hour and 40 minutes after the last game of the draw has officially begun.

❄️ Ice Etiquette, Preparation & Safety

  • Ice Crew Space: Please give our hardworking ice crew plenty of space to get the sheets in top shape. This is especially significant for those playing at 8:45pm. The Nipper is the device that has a very sharp blade used for clipping the top layer of pebble off, so the ice is quick right off the start. Please use common sense.
  • Practice Slides: For your safety, do not practice slide until the numbers on your scoreboard have been removed. That is your cue that the ice is officially ready for you.
  • Rocks: Because the first week coincides with our Summer Youth Camp, the rocks have not been sanded yet. The ice may be straighter the first week, but beware the second week, Scott and his crew will be hard at work over the weekend.
  • Opening Week Bonus: Next week only, ice will be ready at 6:15 PM for those who want to get a few extra slides in and find their "sea legs" after lounging on the beach all summer! Please exercise caution on your maiden voyage back onto the ice. (Note: There is no practice ice available prior to opening games).

🗓️ League Schedules & Schedule Interruptions

You can view all teams and complete game schedules in the Summer GameCentre. Please remember to record the winner/loser/tie after your games—no trophies are on the line, but bragging rights certainly are!

Spares: We are relatively liberal with spares during our summer season. If you need a spare, you have two options.

  1. Use the spares list: Spares List – This list provides names and contacts for people who would be happy to fill in for you.
  2. Friend to spare – if you have a friend that would like to play for you. We are ok with this as long as they complete the waiver and hand in at the office: Waiver

Please note the following schedule adjustments:

  • Monday Night League: No curling on September 7th due to the Labour Day holiday weekend. Your final game will be played on October 5th.
  • Thursday Night League: Due to the overwhelming popularity of our Stu Sells Event, there will be no summer league games on September 10th. That game has been moved to October 8th.

💰 Competitive League Payouts

Winning teams can collect their cash prize at the bar right after their game! The bartenders will have your envelope waiting for you—cold, hard cash to buy your opposition their beverage of choice.

We are looking forward to a fantastic, fun-filled summer season. If you have any questions before next week, please feel free to reach out.

Good curling to all!
