Jerry Sprout 2020

The Jerry Sproat Senior Men’s Bonspiel was held on Wednesday March 4. We had a very successful turnout with a full complement of 32 teams. The teams enjoyed two games, a delicious lunch and lots of prizes.

We wish to acknowledge the generosity of our sponsor OAK-LAND Ford Lincoln. Their support allows us to put on the event and is a major help in covering costs for the day. We thank OAK-LAND and their representative, Dylan Istad, for their involvement with the bonspiel. OAK-LAND Ford Lincoln’s designated charity is Food4Kids an organization that works to ensure that children who don’t always have enough to eat have those needs met.

Food4Kids representative, Gayle Kabbash spoke to us and explained the origin and operation of the charity. An incredible food drive valued at $1,392 and $2,070 donated, making a grand total of $3,462 that was raised for Food4Kids Halton. They support 700 children in Halton region of which 183 children are from Oakville. A huge thanks goes to all involved in making this such a successful event.

On the ice some great curling took place. For the third year in a row, the winning team was skipped by Bob Edmondson. Don Moseley-Williams viced. Charley McFeeters played second and Doug Miller was the lead. We were happy to see Jerry Sproat and his brother Jim. Jerry was on hand to address the players with his usual witty remarks. Jerry also presented his namesake trophy to Bob Edmondson’s winning team.

Putting on a bonspiel involves many ‘to do’ items. Our committee was comprised of Fred Allo, Peter Campbell, Brian Sheridan, Leo Topolniski and Paul Stothers. We couldn’t do this without the great support of the curling club staff: Chris Wai and Casey Base. Whenever curlers from elsewhere play at our club, they rave about the ice conditions so a big thanks to Scott Foster and Kevin Mooney who, as always, do such a great job preparing the ice.
