Junior Curling Program

This program runs most Sundays from 12:00-2:00 and is open to young people aged 12-20 (as of July 1st). This program will consist of fundamental, skill-focused instruction followed by a short 3 to 4 end practice game to reinforce the lessons learned and to practice their strategic thinking and communication skills. There will be a break between instruction and game when curlers will return to the lounge to warm up and have a snack. Snacks will be available for purchase or they may prefer to bring their own. You don't have to be an experienced curler to participate in this program. We support curlers at all levels.

This program is 100% volunteer operated. Therefore, regardless of knowledge or curling experience, all parents and guardians are encouraged to participate in program supervision and coaching! You will be provided with support from the convenors and experienced instructors.

Our program is based on the fundamental attributes that enable young people to grow into great teammates and citizens such as... teamwork, sportsmanship, focus, kindness, loyalty, trust, listening, hard work, great communication, fearlessness, positive attitude, support, and encouragement. Instructors and curlers are equally bound by these guidelines and are expected to practice them at all times during the program and while representing the Oakville Curling Club in any capacity outside the program.

In addition to creating a strong base of fundamental curling skills, our equally important goal for this program is to build on positive energy that is so strong, it is contagious.

This program time is not for private team practice. Teams will be split up and given the opportunity to play with the others curlers in the program. Competitive teams who embrace the opportunity to learn outside their team environment will find that their skills will be enhanced because they will be presented with many unfamiliar opportunities and challenges that will prepare them for the unpredictable competition experiences they will face together. We can all learn from each other and the lessons we learn often come from surprising places.

This the culture of our program. If you feel it fits your needs, we would love to have you join us!

Little Rock Curling – Get the Scoop!

Welcome to Little Rock Curling at the Oakville Curling Club!

The Little Rock curling program runs most Sunday afternoons from 1:30 – 3:30. The program is divided into an instructional session and game each week. During the instructional period, little rocks work on skills development and building knowledge of the game. During the game portion, little rocks are assigned to a team where they have the opportunity to practice game situations.

Little Rockers need to arrive at the club on Sundays no later than 1:45 pm to allow time to change shoes and prepare to be on the ice for 2:00. Curlers are asked to bring:

  • All curlers are required to wear regular soft-soled running shoes (no slider or tape) or curling shoes with 2 grips while not throwing stones. Shoes must be clean footwear (not worn to rink – this is mandatory!)
  • Curling shoes are not required. Step-on-sliders are available for use by the curlers at the club.
  • Loose fitting and warm clothing (no jeans!)
  • HELMETS ARE MANDATORY.  All participants are required to wear a properly fitted and secured (as per the direction of the manufacturer) helmet certified by the (Canadian Standards Association) in the curling rink.
  • A wide selection of safety head gear specifically for Curling can be purchased from vendors such as Ice Halo and Goldline. Choices include visors, toques, ball caps and head bands. These items all retain additional padding that can assist with cushioning the impact of an individual’s head striking the ice surface.

Regardless of knowledge or curling experience, all parents and guardians are encouraged to participate in program supervision and coaching!  An introductory coaching clinic will be held at the beginning of the season and experienced instructors will offer all participants – juniors and parents alike – guidance over the course of the curling season.

New members are welcome to participate on a trial basis for up to 3 weeks. Payment must be provided at registration; however entitled to a full refund. Please advise the need for a trial period at registration.

For more information contact the club 905-844-6982 or the Little Rock convenors.
