Youth Learn to Curl

Youth Learn to Curl Programs

The Youth Learn to Curl Programs will be divided into two age groupings and will run for four weeks.  After successful completion of the Learn to Curl, the curlers will have the opportunity to join the Sunday Youth Curling League (space permitting). The Learn to Curl Programs are based on the newly released Curling Canada U12 and U18 LEARN TO CURL programs.

U15/U18 LEARN TO CURL:

This program is focussed on the U15/U18 curler. It is geared towards curlers age 12 to 17.

“Curling Canada’s U18 Learn to Curl program is designed to introduce teens to the sport of curling. The objective is to have fun, increase physical activity, promote curling as a life-long recreational sport and provide competitive opportunities for participants who show interest and want to remain Competitive for Life. The program is based on Curling Canada’s Long Term Curler Development Framework.”

Each session is 1.5 hours in length and will include both on and off ice time. Helmets for this group are recommended, but not mandatory.

U12 LEARN TO CURL:

This program is focussed on the U12 (aka Little Rock Curler).  It is geared towards curlers age 7 to 11.

“Curling Canada’s U12 Learn to Curl program is designed to introduce children to the sport of curling.  The objective is to have fun, increase physical literacy with key fundamental movement skills (FMS), follow Curling Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) framework and begin sport specific techniques.”

Throughout the course of the program, the groups will be moving through circuits or stations to learn various aspects of curling.  The focus is on FUN as well as learning the game.  These sessions will be 1.5 hours in length.

HELMETS ARE MANDATORY FOR THIS GROUP.  As per Oakville Curling Club Policy, all participants are required to wear a properly fitted and secured (as per the direction of the manufacturer) helmet certified by the CSA (Canadian Standards Association) in the curling rink.  Other forms of headgear are not sufficient.  We are following the recommendations supported by the National Canadian Curling governing body.
