Unexpected Power Outage and Ice Delays at the Curling Club

Last evening brought some unexpected excitement to the curling club, impacting operations and postponing today’s curling schedule.

At around 6:00 PM, while the ice crew was preparing for the 6:40 PM Tuesday Evening Men’s draw, a sudden power outage disrupted their efforts. Upon investigating, the scene outside revealed a telephone pole adjacent to Wallace Park engulfed in flames. Firetrucks and police cordoned off the area, ensuring safety and addressing the situation. The extensive damage is evident, as the pole was burnt entirely in half.

Hydro One crews worked tirelessly through the night to restore power, completing their efforts by 4:00 AM. However, despite hopes for a smooth recovery, complications arose. The club’s brine system, crucial for maintaining the ice, tripped during the outage. This caused the ice temperature to rise steadily, reaching 28°F by 7:00 AM — too warm for curling.

As a result, all curling events for the day have been postponed. Club staff are working diligently to resolve the issue and stabilize the ice, ensuring it meets the quality and safety standards required for play.

We extend our gratitude to Hydro One and the emergency responders for their swift action in addressing the incident. We also thank our members for their patience and understanding as we work to restore normal operations. Updates will be shared as soon as the ice is ready for play.

Stay tuned for further information and thank you for your continued support of the club!
